First - did the nurse or doctor seem concerned or order additional tests? If not, then they are not that concerned about the level and will wait and compare on you next exam. Here are a few things could be going on.
First, the easiest (and in my opinion the most likely), you may not be drinking enough and may be slightly dehydrated. In the first trimester your body adds a pint of blood to cover what you will loose in childbirth. That needs a lot of fluids (water). I was chastised quite a few times for not drinking enough. Both water and unsweetened tea (hot or iced) 'count' toward you daily water goals. Try and stay away from highly sweetened drinks and diet drinks with artificial sweeteners.
Second, you could have an infection, but if you’re not running a fever and the doctor has not run additional tests they probably do not think that is the case.
Third, and LEAST likely, is gestational diabetes (which I had). This does not usually show up until the 7th or 8th month.
Since the amount was small, just try upping your fluids and see what happens at your next appointment. If you are still concerned, call the doctor. That's what they are there for!
Take care - you'll do great!

Usually a trace of protein does not mean anything. Sometimes, as has been noted , proteinuria can be a warning of developing pre-eclampsia--- eclampsia. Keep your weight down. If it was of concern, your doctor would have talked to you about it. Check your BP at home, resting, a couple of times a week. If it is climbing, tell your doctor. This is being over-cautious, really, but I do not want to tell you it''s nothing and have you be the 1 in 100,000 that gets into trouble.

This early in your pregnancy, it is probably just the start of what could become a bladder infection. ( Which is VERY common in pregnancy) If you develop any symptoms such as burning when you urinate or frequent urination in small amounts....then call your doctor. They will prescribe you and antibiotic and you will feel better in a couple of days.
In the meantime, drink plenty of water and cranberry juice.
If the protein in your urine is the only symtom and your blood pressure is fine...then it's probably nothing to worry about.
Good luck and Congrats!

It means that you either haven't had enough to eat or enough to drink... have four children and all of my appt. with my last were in the morning right after dropping the others off a school so no time to think of eating or drinking anything before seeing the midwife several of my urine samples came up like this. She advised me to at least always carry a bottle of water with me..

It probably means you have another infection some where else in your body. Or you might just produce more protien than others.
Its normal to have protein in your urine, its high levels of it that poses an issue.

When I was pregnant, I had the same thing happen. I had an infection that was easily cured by antibiotics.
