There's a hairline crack in the toilet tank.... you can observe the veeeery slow appearance of water drops out of this crack. I'm curious what you would recomment to patch this? (I have the tank empty now and the water main off so it can dry...)

Is there something to fix this, that you can recommend that I can pick up at Walmart? (Walmart is a closer drive, but I'll hit Home Depot if I need to.)

Thanks.

The danger is the fracturing of the tank with someone in attendance, especially a child. I'm sorry, I could give you a temporary patch suggestion, but it is too dangerous, that china can cut you faster than you know. It is not cost effective to replace just the tank, a whole toilet would cost about the same. You can change it. Good Luck.

Turn the water valve behind the toilet off and then flush the water out. Take the lid off the tank and use a blow hair dryer to thoroughly dry the water. Go to Lowe's, Home Depot, or any hardware store and pick up some epoxy. Follow the directions and apply (it will be like putty but and sets up rather quickly) the epoxy to the crack (work some into the crevice) and let it cure for a few hours. You can turn the water back on and shouldn't have any more leaks.

Without reading past LuckyChuc, I suggest you offer the 10 points. No offense to any others.
Tank replacements aren't outrageously expensive. In fact toilet replacements are budget easy, relatively speaking.
There is NO WAY to effectively resolve the issue with "patching"
A more critical issue might be that at some point, through stress, or hitting the tank accidently with something, you may end up with 2 gallons of water on the floor.

No matter what you use to patch it with, the crack is gonna come back.

Once the integrity of the tank has been compromised, you really really really need to replace it.

Sorry. I know you were looking for a quick fix, but it's cheaper in the long run just to go pick up another toilet.

Leave it a week or 2... the tank is porous / glazed porcelain and water seeps in there... Once it's dry, smear some silicone on the inside of the tank about 12" around the crack area. Use a putty knife to level it out and let it cure for 24 hours at least... should work fine.

Hi you'd be best all around & cost wise to purchase a new tolit or a new tank. That crack is slow now but eventually it will deepen & it could do it while your out. Tolit water damage can cost up into the thousands--so all in all $60 for a new Toliet (basic design, American Standard or Crane or Similar brand) is nothing.

You can do a temporary patch with silicone. (Yes you can get this at Wal Mart.)
However, when you can afford it, you probably should go ahead and invest in a new tank.
Did the crack appear near the bolt area, if so, you have tightened them too much.

Get a whole new toilet. Oh you could mess around with it, trips to the hardware store, drying it out, applying glue, redoing it a few times and on and on, but it will crack and leak again. Toilets aren't all that expensive.

First you are going to need a kiln. Then take some pottery classes. Once you have mastered porcelains, it will only take you a couple of weeks to fix that old tank. That's a long time to hold it in. Or you could just buy a new one, and be resting on your throne in hours.

this happened to us.........trust me, we found out at 4 am that us trying to save money didn't. The water was everywhere and it was an AWFUL mess. This is something to do right the first time. Get a new tank, don't try to cut costs.
