does anyone remember this? Does anyone know what it was for? It used to be common on TV transmissions in the 80s and 90s on terrestrial TV

It's called 'the 30 second cue' and obviously appears 30 seconds before the adverts come on, it's used when programs are videoed rather than filmed.

It's still there - I quite often see it on the ITV channels... it's to show the adverts are about to be shown and I thought that was all it was for - didn't know about anything else. Now with different TVs the picture is sometimes wide screen or stretched so it might cut off that part of the picture - that could be perhaps why you don't see it?

It's to warn the people at the TV studio to get ready to show the adverts. Nowadays the system is more automated because of computers so you don't need a square to warn some guy to change the machine to show adverts.

If you can see the box it means your tv is incorrectly tuned, as you are not meant to see it. It is a visual countdown so that the producer, continuity and controllers know when to switch to the ads. You can see a similar thing in the cinema as a signal to change reels, except it is a circle instead of a rectangle

it actually is still there i rekon, but it gets cut off because of wide screen tv's.

if you change your view mode on your tv so you've got gaps at the top and bottom, you will prob still c it!

try it out it might take you back to the good old days! lol
