I know you can buy them but I like the idea of doing it myself, I have basic electical/mechanical knowledge. Are there any kits? Could I convert my existing curtain track. Also a light sensor would be nice so they open in the morning and close at night automatically.

Swish cutains made an electrically operated kit with a light sensor option. I fitted one a few years ago for a customer. I think Swish are no longer !!!

go to your local DIY store and take a look at the track and kits for a basic guide to how to and what you need.
then if you really want to spend your time on designing your own kit (waste of time and brain power when kits already exist to do exactly what you want to do).
converting existing track probably not. just take a look at what is already on the market. buy a kit for one room/window and then use your technical know how to improve on what already exists.
if you can improve on that great.

but save yourself the TIME and buy existing kits unless you want to spend.
as for a light sensor i believe they are available for the kits in store ready to add to the full track and motor kits available.
if they are no longer available why not buy a separate sensor if you can get one else where if that fails why not cannibalise a dusk to dawn light. or better yet wire the light to operate the curtains.
just an idea.

based on when i used to work in a diy store and sold the full curtain track and motor kits.

good luck.
