I rent an apartment that has 4-bulb I-shaped light fixtures with no coverings. I have found that only 2 bulbs provide adequate lighting for each room. Is there any danger in leaving 2 sockets empty?

don't worry - the electricity won't leak out! :). The only danger is if someone might stick their fingers into the empty socket while the power is on. Safest approach is to put some burned out conventional light bulbs (not 'energy efficent ones) into the empty sockets.

You can leave them empty -- just make sure nobody sticks their fingers in the empty sockets. A lightbulb in a socket completes the electrical circuit, so if there's no bulb in the socket the circuit doesn't get completed and electricity doesn't flow. This will not harm a light fixture. The reason I say don't let anyone stick their fingers in the empty sockets is the human body conducts electricity pretty well, and if you inadvertently stick a finger in a socket and complete the circuit (which is VERY easy to do) electricity will flow through your body. At the very least, it'll give you a nasty jolt. At the very worst, it could cause you to have a heart attack -- NOT good.

This is VERY safe. There is no danger. Actually, because the socket is filled with a light bulb no one will accidentally get electrocuted from an open socket. Good idea. Plus, it looks better to have the fixture filled with bulbs than it would to have open empty light bulb sockets.

I have this same issue. I just leave burnt out bulbs in the socket. It just covers all the bases.

Funny! My sweetie and I were talking about this just yesterday! No, you can leave the sockets empty but make sure it's covered for safety's sake. Our fixtures are on the ceiling and I just leave the spent lightbulbs in, but you can leave 'em empty - no problem!

NO DANGER BUT i WOULD JUST LOOSEN THE BULBS NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF THE SOCKET, JUST IN CASE SOMETHING METALIC MIGHT FALLS INTO THE SOCKET. BESIDES IT LOOKS BETTER THAN EMPTY

Yes...it's open electricity when the light is on. Something could get in it and spark a fire.
