Outdoor BBQ’s should be planned to face the prevailing breezes. This orientation allows the smoke to blow away from the cook, but also provides the best oxygen supply for the firey coals. Fire brick should be selected for the firebox of outdoor fireplaces.

Obviously, bricks in garden walls, brick barbeques, etc, will be permanently set outside close to the ground without a roof for protection from exposure to the elements – accumulated snow in winter, water splashes and precipitation in rainy weather and freezing rain conditions, and freeze-thaw cycles during fall, winter, and early spring. For lasting beauty and durability, its best to select stone or high-density clay bricks that are resistant to freeze-thaw disintegration, and a lime-based mortar since that allows “autogenous healing” – when expansion & contraction happens due to heating and cooling through day and night and summer and winter, lime-based mortars (called 1-1-6 in some places) will automatically heal their own fractures, whereas regular masonry mortar’s cracks will grow bigger and fall out.
It may be a good idea, for extra protection, to cover or wrap a tarp over it during the winter months if you're in a snowy-winter part of the continent.
