As of June 2000, there were around 8,927 man-made objects in space. you can find the details at the below site.

Sure the figure must have grown by large amount, but this will give you an indication.

Too many to have an accurate nuber. Technically, every powertool lost in space is a satellite. That 25 000 number seems like a good estimate.
