Hitler's way of structuring society was a knock-off of Mussolini's Fascism, so there was an ideological link. Even so, Hitler despised Mediterranean cultures such as the Italian, considering the northern European strains racially and culturally superior. Thus, for example, orchestras would be told by the Nazis to perform Wagner instead of Verdi for reasons of ethnic prejudice, just as I have heard that to this day the music of Wagner is seldom performed in Israel. So I think Hitler's favor towards Mussolini was rooted not in the military performance of the Italians but in his sympathy for what Italian Fascism stood for.

Hitler was using their resources to help him fight in the war. He probably would have killed Mussolini once he no longer proved to be an asset. He also didn't want the Italians fighting against him because that would give the allies easy access to Germany.
