Check to be sure that the filter is working correctly and isn't clogged up. It could be very dirty or in need of repair or replacement.
Also you should do a 25% or so water change each week to be sure the water stays clean. This will take care of the problem within no time at all.

The Gourami's belong to a group of fish called Anabantid's these fish breathe air directly from the surface and remain near the surface Your Nan needs to change 20-25 per cent of the water every week You dont mention the tank size but for the fish you have listed you should have a tank size of 30x12x12 inches Change 25 per cent of the water and buy a water testing kit from your local fish shop

That's more than likely the problem do a partial water change making sure the clean water is the same temperature as the tank water make sure you put chlorine control in the new water if you haven't got any boil some water and leave in a bucket overnight to take the chlorine out of the water
Try and do a partial water change every two weeks it will make a big difference to the fish

You or your nan must change the water at least once a month. Once plecs have had their belly full they can be messy creatures and cover the grit with their wastage. She needs to put a filter and good aeration in the tank. If gran does not do this the gouramies will become sick.

with 2 plecs, she needs to be doing water changes once a week of about about 20%
do you know what size the tank is and what type of plecs she has?
depending on the species of plec it will get to 5" or 24", so knowing what species she has is essential. also some plecs can be territorial and get into fights with each other!
it would be heightened ammonia levels that would cause fish to be lethargic. although gouramis are top dwellers as well.

The water is poulted. Maybe too much feed or too high Nitrite level (biological filter is not performing) do another partial water change immediatley otherwise fish will die.
Need to find out what has gone wrong with system otherwise will lead to death of filter and ultimatly fish, does the water look cloudy or smell?

stop cleaning the tank so often never take out all the water in your fish tank you only need to disregard about 20% of the water clean the rocks, walls of tank and refill the tank and always change the filters and see what the fish will do after that.

partial water changes should be weekly not monthly. usually inactive fish are cold. gourami breathe at the top so they are just being lazy staying up there all the time.

sounds like lack of oxygen you need the water change process and clean the pump filters out.if you are particulary worried you can buy oxygen tablets for while the changes are being made.gouramis are surface dwellers mostly so check if they are gasping also you may not have a problem
