Some people are willing to spend great sums of money for procedures to extend their pets lives. Years ago .... it seemed as if they were just euthanized . How much money would you be willing to spend to save your beloved pet ? Do you think pets have acheived a higher status than they had years ago or ... are we just more affluent ???

i don't spend more than the animal is worth. i have a large number of rabbits, when one gets sick, i treat it the best i can at home, and will only occasionally go to the vet, when i know what the rabbit has, can be treated cheaply. Typicall with my rabbits once they get sick they die, and if they live, they aren't worth anythinf for show or breeding.

For the first part of your question, I spent over 25,000 keeping our Rottie alive during 14 years.
I don't think people are more affluent today, nor have pets reached a higher status, I think the advances in vet care have made this possible! I am so thankful for great vets, they are amazing, if it can be done to a human, it can be done for an animal. Insurance and care credit is also available now where it was not in the past.

I had a pom who had a kidney disease didn't know until the very end but spend lots of money she urinated allot also had seizer started at the age 2 she ended @ 5 I spend as much as needed to keep her going until I just couldn't stand to watch her suffer. I feel pets have change for family they seem to be more like children for most people. There are still others out there but I don't see to see many stray animals like I use to back in my child hood of course there are more Chinese restaurants too LOL

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer for this, as it simply depends on the owner. Personally, my cats are like my own children - and if I didn't have the money for them to get anything that they might possibly require, I wouldn't have gotten them in the first place.

In answer to pet status, that is a small bit of it, but I tend to lean towards most people having the money to be able to care more appropriately for their pets than they were in "the olden days".

It may sound horrible but it depends on which pet. I have five dogs. Bess I know once she gets too far down hill I have to let her go. Mack doesn't have much of a will to push on so I wouldn't do as much for him as I would Cubby or Bear that push through anything always. Ive actually given this thought as to each dogs age and personality and it does depend on what happens to which one. Bess and Mack would never survive cancer. Bear won't stop for anything and Cubby is a survivor so I wouldn't have as hard a time putting them through treatment. You have to think of the stress of the treatment for the ailment.

My youngest female it would depend on her actions at the time due to her own freakish nature. She hurt her ear on the fence and it was everything I could do to catch her to nurse it. She didn't want anyone to touch it. The only think good about giving her meds or treating her is she loves her crate so she is containable.

Its a hard question to ask and Im sure most will say all or non but it really should be given more thought as to the pets wellbeing through treatment and after.

I really want to answer this...............Pets are a part of your family. A gift- if you will. Loyal-cant lie or cheat on you. Affectionate, unconditionally. Non-judgemental. Wonderful companions. NOW, I had to put my cat to sleep on Saturday.I HAD NO CHOICE-he had a blood clot & was in tremendous pain.I loved him so much, I took his pain away & now I am dealing with it. Money ? If I could have helped him to survive,I would have. Place relative in the spot of pets & reread your question. Yes - I will have him cremated.

Well, for horses, colic is the #1 killer and colic surgery begins at $5,000 (the low end) for most procedures, but that's for extreme cases of colic if your horse isn't dead by then. Usually the bill ends up at around $10,000 and your horse's life isn't guaranteed.

That's how much I'd sacrifice for my horse.

If I could have saved my Lab yesterday I would have spent any amount of money to still have him here today. The pain of missing him is overwhelming.
