Yes.
A virus can insert itself into the bios. Im not sure how to get rid of these, because this would mean the virus would have to write a line of code into the bios......Im no expert here, but it can be done.

As far as the 2 reply to this message, which is out of line for a response, but, I have an EPOX 8npa SLI motherboard that came with this awseome program to flash the bios while im running windows. And you can flash any bios on any computer to upgrade it if you know what your doing. If you dont you could end up frying the mobo.....But yes it is possible, and my laptop even has a virus protection setting in the bios itself so anytime a program tries to write to, or access the bios, I will get a popup asking permision to allow this to take place.

contrary to what Keith said bios is writable - it's nonvolatile ram than can be overwritten during a flash rewrite. The first answer is correct, though most viruses don't attack the bios. There aren't many hackers out there willing to exploit variations in hardware code when it's easier to exploit a standard OS.
