The answer to the puzzle is 10.

EXPLANATION:

Add the square of the tens digit to the unit digit of a term to get the succeeding term.

Thus we observe that:

97 = 97

9^2 + 7 = 88

8^2 + 8 = 72

7^2 + 2 = 51

5^2 +1 = 26;

And the final term thus corresponds to:

2^2 + 6 = 10

If the last number was 27 instead of 26 the differences between each number on the series are: 9*1, 8*2, 7*3, 6*4

Thus the next number would have been 2. Oh well.

the next term is 10.
let 1st term=26
so,difference(d) in -26 & 51 is 9
te formula for finding the a.p is :a+(n-1)d
i.e. -26+(5-1)x9=10.
