I have had several houseplants ranging from herbs to flowers. I have noticed that after a couple weeks these small white bug looking things appear at the TOP of the soil. They do not move.

I have been looking online trying to figure out what it is and my conclusion is that it is a fungus caused from overwatering.

Is this true? And how can I help my plants?

I accept as true with what record.Shell said. It needs repotting. depart that previous airborne dirt and mud a recommendations from the position you do the repotting, and earlier repotting, drag the plant, roots and all, by a sink finished of warmish soapsuds to remove those critters. The cleansing soap gained't harm the plant in any respect, yet when there are any insects putting round, it is going to probable kill them. those are insects that likely stay in or on the soil, so spraying the leaves of the plant would not do a lot. And, sure...decrease decrease back on the watering. reliable success!

I'm not sure what they are, but a couple of weeks ago one of my plants was dying. So I decided to toss it and as I was taking it out of the pot, a million little moving white bugs were in the soil. What ever the bugs were, they were killing my plant.

Sounds like Meely Bugs. U can remove them by a very soft brush like a childs toothbrush and soapy water and wash the leaves off, and scrape off the top part of the soil and repot them into a clean pot. My mom always used rubbing alcohol on the leaves with cotton to clean them and kill the bugs. Try going to or call ur local florist or nusery they will be more ehlpful as to how to get rid and prevent them coming back............Good Luck

Aphids. Spray the entire plant with soapy water. don't rinse. check every week for reinfestation. This will control them. Repotting the plants is something you should do periodically. this will improve water absorbtion, and allow roots to grow.

sounds like spider mites, they will eventually build a web over the buds of the plant and eat from inside out. Very bad, there is an oil you can buy but i can't remember what it is sorry, you dilute it and spray, it smells kindof bad but they will go away.

They may be aphids--a vinager solution (1/2 water, 1/2 vinager & a tbsp of dishsoap) shaken & then sprayed on can work to eleminate them
