There is, a radio signal that can be used by law enforcement/emergency services to change the light to green. It is also available illegally for regular citizens, but if you're caught with one expect to pay a heavy fine.

In 1965, I was an ambulance driver in California and we had such a device. The technology was exactly like a remote garage door opener, except it caused nearby traffic lights to be red in all four directions. The trouble was too many idiots (who must also have been hearing impaired) simply assumed that there was a malfunction and stupidly ran the red light. The city was involved in several expensive lawsuits because the device wasn't part of California's vehicle code. After two years, a study concluded that the device caused more accidents than it prevented and they were all removed. Notice that the study concluded that the device, not the idiots, caused the accidents. Never underestimate the general stupidity of the American public!

There is a device, but the cost is not realistic for some counties. Everything in law, fire and ems are extremely expensive. It's idiotic to pay $800 for a back board to move patients when the board is made of wood and can be made in shop class for $50. If we can get the cost of things down, maybe we can all be safer. Write your city/council person/mayor or Governor.

These devices are widely used; and until recently you could buy one online for your own car - like radar detectors, using one is normally illegal.

The transponders send a signal to the light, and it automatically initiates a signal change, regardless of where the signal is in its current cycle.

Actually their already is and some departments do use it. It depends on what emergency vehicle package they buy or if they can get it from an aftermarket company. It all depends on if they have money in the budget to outfit their equipment with it.

As stated in my EMT book as regulated by the US DOT amd my firefighter SOP's, lights and sirens on emergency vehicles do NOT automatically give them the right of way on streets, it merely asks permission. If you don't want to move, you don't have to (unfortunately). That's why you see them hesitate at intersections and lights, they're checking to see 1) is there anyone coming, and 2) are they being given right of way to proceed.

There is such a device, but not all depts have them and unfortunately they've made their way into the hands of private citizens who have no business having that.
