Library's can have thousands of books, so they have to be numbered by category and location.
Each aisle in the library is numbered also.

A book number could be 642.235

The 6 would mean its in the 600 aisle. 42 would be the order it's in, in that aisle. The numbers after the decimal are dependent on how many of "that kind" of book there are.

There is also a file reference in the library, so if you're looking up a book by title, the index card will give you the exact number of the book and you'll know where to look.
