A fellow named Kazuki Takahashi created Yu-Gi-Oh. Originally, he created a card game called Magic & Wizards(named to parody Magic the Gathering and possibly Wizards of The Coast) and featured it in his Yu-Gi-Oh manga for fun. The card game wasn't the original focal point of Yu-Gi-Oh but fans kept writing him and asking him to put more Magic & Wizards in the manga. Magic & Wizards isn't the Yu-Gi-Oh card game we know today. It was solely Monster and Spell card. In 1998, Magic & Wizards was released as a card game by Bandai. Only 3 booster sets were released and if you read the manga all the cards are still drawn like Magic & Wizards cards. Later in 1998, Konami released the first version of their Yu-Gi-Oh cards. However there were no rules attached to them so they couldn't be played. Finally, in 1999 Konami released the Yu-Gi-Oh Original Trading Card Game(thats what its called in Japan) and its been an enormous success ever since. The Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game(called the TCG by Yu-Gi-Oh "experts") wasn't released until April of 2002. My best friend happened to see this new card game and decided we were learning how to play it. ^_^ Note: Although the game is named after the anime its important to note that the game's connection to the anime is ephemeral at best. The anime is really just a 30 minute commercial for the OCG and TCG. Also, the anime doesn't teach you how to play because it often break the rules. *lol*

The difference between Genius and Insanity is the amount of success you have. The people of Konami are NOT idiots. They came up with a strategy that made little pieces of cardboard (less than baseball card quality) worth sometimes up to $50!!!!

They succeeded brilliantly, so they are geniuses. No matter how stupid the idea may be, people bought into it, and Konami's got tons of money, 2 tv shows, and probably a few movies out of it.
