They are just called ribs, why wasnt the top rib named something other than the top part of your rib, same with middle and bottom. etc.

The first seven bones are called the true ribs.

The next three pairs of bones are called false ribs.

The last two sets of rib bones are called floating ribs.

Most bones are named in 'sets', like the Vertebra- there are (usually) 33, and they are named in groups - sacrum, coccygeal , cervical, thoracic and lumbar.

The only reason I can think for this is ease! There isn't a good reason to give them individual names when they are very similar.

darn you making people think this early...Anyways there are some 200 bones in the body and each has its own name except for those identical ones that share the same name , finger bones are just fingers, they only call them by index and such to make a difference cuz they extend seperatly. maybe ribs are just ribs cuz they are clustered together and dont extend individuattly, or becuz they are all attached to the same bone and arent considered seperate at all..
i make no sence i know

Now why would you want each rib to have a separate name? Just ribs is fine!

They do have numbers 1-12, right and left. Same with metacarpals and metatarsals.
