Poetry is a very broad concept. At its most basic meaning, poetry is language used to evoke feelings or a sense of a place or event.

Poetry can take many forms, and there are no rules encompassing all of poetry. Poems can have a set rhyme and meter, or can move to their own rhythm. Poems can be organized in stanzas, or can be free-form and meandering around the page, like the works of e. e. cummings. They can be designed to read silently or they may work best when read aloud. The rules you follow in your writing determine what type of poem it is. And if you follow no rules, then it is simply "free verse." In general, if you think something you wrote is a poem, then it probably is.

Poetry can be used to describe anything, but description is not the only goal. A good poem will make the reader identify with the emotions implied by the author. Writing about a fond memory from your childhood should evoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth, without explaining the emotions outright. Poetry is the medium in which the saying "show, don't tell" is most important. Figurative language should be used to make the reader see for him- or herself what is happening, instead of just telling what is happening. Your meaning should be clear but not heavy-handed.

I think of poetry as an art form, where the expressionism is in words.

Some poetry is written for the moment, a light reading, if you will.
Some poems gives a deep insight into the poet, at the moment of writing. Others will be in between.

The poet is often in touch with his/her feelings more than are most others, or perhaps senses things at a higher level; is more aware of the parts that make the whole, and appreciates them. A forest is comprised of trees, but every tree makes its own contribution, each in its own way.

A poet sees a different ebb and flow in life's circumstance and may experience a slighly different rhythm, or rhyme, in them.

When faced with something that stirs those emotions, a poet is able to see and feel the essences of the circumstances and the underlying emotion, and put those essences into words.

Poems combine the essence of dreams, experience and one's innermost emotions; they are a printed format where life's moments are distilled into the most poignant words available to the poet, and those words, feelings and thoughts are willingly shared with others.

Poetry is the language of the soul. It is a means of expressing what you can see, imagine, feel. It can say more in a few lines to someone than a whole conversation can. Poetry is an art of the past, present and for poets like me always a future that will never fade

Poetry (from the Greek "ποίησις," poiesis, a "making" or "creating") is a form of verbal art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its ostensible meaning. Poetry may be written independently, as discrete poems, or may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in poetic drama, hymns or lyrics.
