Different names in different regions. IF you saw it in movies, it was dandiya /raas or rather Garba, done during navratras ( Nine nights leading to Dasara , the tenth day,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navratri )

Kolattam is from another state, In kolattam, performed by 8 to 40 artists grouped in pairs, The stick provides the main rhythm. The artists lead by the leader move into two circles, the inner circle receiving the strikes while the outer circle delivering them. Kolatam offers a great variety of entertainment to the spectators as well as the participants

It is called "Raas Garba" or "Daandia" in common parlance.it is a folk dance from state of Gujarat in western India.It is suppose to be a dance from Krishna period and now a days it takes place during the festival of Dashehra when Goddess Durga ( commonly called mother Durga ) is worshiped for nine days.This dance has now spread to all over India.
