The topic of the conversation is rather important. I like to talk about travel and language so most conversations on those topics will keep my interest.

People like to talk about themselves. As a hairstylist, I have learned the art of redirecting a question into a question, back to them, about them. This makes people go on for hours....I dont know, what do you think?

If I am learning something new from the conversation or if the topic is debatable and evokes inspired, passionate opinions/views.

Good question! I'm sitting here really thinking about that, never thought about it b4. Hmmm, well part of me wants to say people who are interested in me, but that sounds so selfish.Sheesh, I'm going to think more on this question today, thanks for asking it.
