Should the value of these be lowered to 2 or even 1 point to encourage more entertaining play? It seems to many rugby matches are decided by a boring penalty contest these days.

You're right, just look at the change on Englands form since Jonny got his kicking boots back on.
I wasn't intending to insult England here, it was just an example of why I agree with the question

No because then more penalties will be given away to prevent tries. This would mean the team that comitted the fowl would only lose a maximum of 2 points instead of a possible 7 points. Teams are already getting away with murder when it comes to giving away penalties to prevent tries. Lowering the value of penalties to 2 would benefit the team that commited the fowl even more!
When it comes to drop goals there arent a lot of them being scored these days so it wouldnt have a major effect!

No, I think that it is about right. As well as penalising all foul play, the penalty kick has to deter professional fouls, which would lead to less tries being scored. As a result, the game would be less entertaining than it is now.
As one example, the ball could be illegally handled in the scrum by the defensive team, which would rob the attacking side of a great opportunity to score a try. At least, if there are three points on offer for the attacking side, it would lessen the foul play.

Difficult, as you need to stop foul play and keep it entertaining.
So you have to penalise players for slowing the ball down etc.
There are new rules being experimented with in south Africa at the moment. Some are daft, but intended to make it more open and less kicking.
Don't think anyone has an issue with drop goals though, saw a prop do one the other week - think it was in South Africa. He apologised to his fly half. It was class.
You could just stop people from kicking at the posts from penalties all together.

try looking at scotlands win 7 penalty kicks all by cris patterson whilst i think johnny kicked 5 but hey lets just jump on the anti english brigade.Can i make a suggestion next time england play dont bother to watch it because you know its going to be boring and just for the record wales have not scored a try yet where england have so that goes to show we can score trys just like the rest of them.

That would`nt make it more entertaining, just the oposite. The would`nt be worried about giving a penalty away if it was only one point would they.

I think if the value were to be reduced, we'd see more foul play, as teams would be more willing to risk a single point than three.
I think the scoring is fine as it is.

no it shouldn't becuase when it is a penalty kick or a drop goal diffeence in the score it makes everything so tense
