My CPU usage was up too 100% and now it slowed down but not to normal. What do you guys think is wrong with my computer could it be my hardware going or just some dust built up on one of the cables from the motherboard is causing the problems. Do you guys think I should repair it or just use it till it breaks and get a new machine. Its only a HP 8665 with a 30 GB harddrive and the processor is 605 MHz and what really sucks is the ram is only 128 Mb. So what do you guys think I should do please let me know. If there are any computer wizards that could help out a wizard. Also someone told me to reseat the heat sink how do I do that and where would I find it. Normally I'm great with computers but I'll be damn if this one hasn't got me.
Thank you to anyone who answers.

Yes, check for spy ware, try spybot it has worked best for me. Also, stopping processes from starting will help, some. How often do you reboot your system? You may be getting what is called memory leaks. If you keep your system on all the time, try rebooting to 'reset' the ram.

Another thing you can try is defragmenting your hard drive. If you download and delete a lot of stuff from your system, this may also be a source of slowdown.

Looking at your system specs, you are fairly outdated by todays standards, and if you are running XP, you will not get much better at all, period.

You should not need to 'reseat' (remove and reattach the heat sink to your CPU). If your system is not overheating, the heatsink is fine. You know your system isn't over heating if it stays on for more than 5 min. or so.

I hope this helps, good luck...

lol cpu usage has nothing to do with the heatsink. Your cpu usage is being consumed because you have too many processes running at one time. You need to disable some startup processes in msconfig, research it. Your heatsink is what keeps your processor cool by distributing heat through a copper/aluminum block with a fan blowing on it. Your processor is very slow too, so dont be suprised if even with cpu usage at below 10 percent to get much done. It would make a good dedicated server though :)

Hi Steve,

You probably have spy ware or a virus. It sounds more like spy ware. You definitely desperately need more memory.

First clean up spyware.

AntiSpyware watches for malicious cookies, spy ware and other malicious things put on your computer by websites that want to spy on you or use your system.

You should have Windows Defender. It is free from Microsoft and watches your system prevents programs from taking over your home page etc.

Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...

Two other free programs you should get & run about once a week are Spybot and Adaware. They also are free and you can get them both here - http://www.download.com/

Next get at least 512 Mb of memory. It will make a very big difference.

Norm

Keith S is closest to correct. Stop processes from starting if you're not using them very often. Run anti-virus and anti-spyware on it because a bunch of these little bugs can really eat up CPU time! Best of Luck! ;-)=

I'd buy a new one right now, go... now... buy a new one. I dearly hope you aren't using Windows XP on that machine and if you are, wow... just... wow.

While your problem here may or may not be related to the specs of your computer, it's not even worth trying to trouble shoot. Just buy a new machine.

On a Mac, shift/administration/3 takes a image of the show. in case you press shift/administration/4, you are able to click and drag over the area you want; the picture is taken once you launch the mouse button.
