Americans refer to the IRA as 'freedom fighters' and yet the IRA conducted a lengthy and extremely well organised campaign of terror by blowing up shops, bars, and public transport - which definitely terrorised the 60 million residents of the UK. Imagine not being able to shop at Harrods at Christmas without having to worry about being blown up.
Some global citizens believe some American groups are terrorist organisations as well, because they act on their inexplicably self-indulgent insecurity and create violence and totalitarianism BEYOND their border and throughout the world, mainly by invading countries which threaten their wealth or power.

It's a fascinating question. I grew up listening to songs and stories of the glorious freedom fighters of the IRA, and later heard them called "terrorists." I heard the term applied to several other groups as well and became interested in how "terrorists" became what they are.

It seems that terrorism arises as a political tool when a nation's government is controlled or unduly influence by the government of another, more powerful nation. The citizens of the controlled nation have no method by which they can petition the government for representation or a greater voice in the affairs of the nation and ultimately turn to violence as their only recourse.

An example that comes to mind is that of a colony of a large military power. The citizens of the colony are treated as a resource by the colonizing nation, denied representation and, should they protest, are punished by severe means and elevated taxes. The colonists are driven into a desperate situation in which their protest become more violent, including such acts as throwing a cargo of tea from a ship into the harbor to protest taxes. This sort of thing is met with more repressive behavior on the part of the colonizers and the relationship continues to erode until the colonists begin to take shots at troops.

You'd have to take that up with the press. As far as the IRA was/is concerned, I don't look at either side as right or wrong, but do agree that it's the same unreasoning hate that seems to motivate all terrorism. On your second statement, that seems rather strange from the remnants of the British empire which conquered countless countries just for expansion.

Because we were attacked only by fundamentalists. Other groups foreign terrorists aren't as personal to us, they seem to live only in the news and have no basis on reality. Also many Christians hate people of other religions and this just gives them a chance to rant about how they are so evil and we are so good. Many American citizens call those groups terrorist too. Please don't generalize us by our president.

Of course the IRA are terrorists, as are Basque rebels in Spain and the Red Brigade in Italy. They don't pose any threat outside their own borders and are no threat to America. Islamic terrorists are a threat.
