Lets start from the beginning!
Authentic-Macedonia is one of the biggest regions of Greece. It is situated in the north part of Greece and it borders 3 Balkan states.
The ancient Macedonia was a Greek kingdom and it was roughly the same size as the modern region of authentic Macedonia of Greece. From the ancient Greek state of Macedonia, Alexander started his epic campaign of spreading the Greek culture and the Greek civilization all over the known word. His campaign was so successful that for nearly 300 years Greek (Hellenistic) Kingdoms controlled Asia Minor, Middle East, Egypt and even the north part of India.
There is also a state that emerged from Yugoslavia and it is officially recognized by UN as FYROM meaning Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. That country has no relation with ancient (or modern) Greek Macedonia but it is instead a Slavic/Albanian country. {The 2/3 of the population is Slav-Macedonians (of Bulgarian origin) and the 1/3 is Albanian/Macedonians}
During the communist dictatorship of Tito a great propaganda took place in that state. The propaganda tried to “convert” the mixed population to believe that they are linked to the ancient Greek Macedonians and that they need to take real Macedonia back from Greece.
The propaganda has worked on some on the Slavs and some (few fanatics) actually believe that they are true Macedonians and although they speak a Slavic language and they are part of the Slavic culture they actually believe that they are not Slavs!!!!
Of course the government of FYROM (Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia) has clearly stated that they are not linked to Greek Macedonia and Alexander the Great and is still doing a great effort to stop the few fanatics from compromising the stability of the new state.
the first President of Slaviic/Albanian- Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35). Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of FYROM(Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia) to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great … "In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language”.
On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S(Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia)Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, “There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country".
Moreover, the Foreign Minister of the Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia, Slobodan Casule, in an interview to Utrinski Vesnik of Skopje on December 29, 2001, said that he mentioned to the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Solomon Pasi, that they "belong to the same Slav people.”
Also the Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia is negotiating with Greece (under the UN authority) for an international name that will not insult the Greeks and will not have any claim against authentic Greek Macedonia.
(The name that the country is using for itself is actually "Makedonija" but they are using internationally the Greek name “Macedonia” and a lot tend to confuse the Slavic/Albanian state with authentic-Macedonia of Greece).

Ancient Macedonia was a kingdom of ancient Greece like Athens and Sparta known for Alexander the Great who spread Greek culture all over the known world.It is the north part of Greece and it also used to spread along what is now parts of Bulgaria,Albania and the south part of former Yugoslavia. During the Roman and Byzantine empire it remained as the Macedonia region. After the breakdown of the Othoman empire its largest part joined the Greek state but unfortunately some parts were occupied by Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. So modern Macedonia is the still a region of Greece .Some confusion is created by a former Yugoslavian country in the north of Greece who is trying to use the name of Macedonia although they have absolutely no ethnical relation to it for political,touristic and imperialistic reasons creating great confusion.

Of course I know about Macedonia!
It is the place that Alexander the Great was born.

It is called like this since that time up to now and it is the northern part of Greece!Its capital is Thessaloniki which is the co-capital of Greece.
There is Fyrom also that wrongly uses the name of Macedonia.
If you ever come in Greece,in northern Greece ,you will totally understand what I am talking about,what a big mistake the foreigners do,by using that name for Fyrom.
