They are usually sent to be recycled.

Stripped down and the prts are sent for recovery e.g metal scrap e.t.c.

It is good to keep your old computers as economic crises tend to come by time to time and now speacially when it has been "high tide" so probably it is going to be going down and could be very fast now. Many economist even think so. Also there might come any other crises that prevents us bying and using computers as climate is changing, more calamities, viruses etc.
So in case old computers can be used for writing at least as nobody has anymore typewriting machines.

Some yes, down the dump, but some, try to extract money out of it by selling it as a working piece while the less miserly ones sell it as scrap and get a few bucks out of it. The parts can be recycled too.

If they're made by certain manufacturers like Dell, they can be taken away and recycled for free. Else you can pay to dump or recycle them, or if you're lucky someone will take them off you for free.

Bring them to the recycling centre, where they will be stripped down and all the useful metal will be recovered from them.

there is a guy just outside of silicone valley at the "digi-barn" that collects and has a museum of the old computers...

I use them for target practice.

maybe you can take parts like modem sound card etc.
if you have a really large amount of old computers you can make
money of it by melting the gold parts i know someone who did it
