A hero is a symbol of the greater good, s/he is a person that represents all of the good qualities of humanity, decency, respect, pride, honesty, justice and the pursuit of peace and equality. In the mythological period, a hero was expected to hold all of these traits, (as well as usually be very attractive) with an almost god-like essence about them. In the more modern use of the word, a hero is not so highly pressurized with ideals of astronomical performances of deadly feats and/or taking on deadly foes. Instead, today’s definition of a hero (in my opinion) is one that is simply able to put someone else before himself or herself. As another answerer mentioned, we all have “a hero” inside of us just waiting for a chance to come out through our actions.
This can be anything; from the old woman whose hero is the firefighter who pulled her out of a burning building, to the boy whose hero is a simple organ donor for his much needed new kidney. Even all the way down to a little girl whose hero is her dad for checking to make sure there are no monsters in her closet before bed. All of these people are heroes to someone – a person who has helped another out of kindness and love, and nothing more. So, I say to you this, it is not the one who walks away the victor from battles that is a hero, but the one who walks through life holding true to those qualities that highlight the good in mankind. Cheers!

The term, "hero", is used way to much today and is applied many times where it does not belong. Such as firefighters and police. Although there have been many that could be called hero's, simply being one doesn't make you one. Real heros do what is needed at the time it is needed. Most real heros will you that they were scared to death while the incident was happening.
Real heros don't know that they are, they simply react to a situation as they feel they must.

a hero is a person who comes to the aid/rescue of another person/animal who has ended up in a risky situation. Yes, anyone can be a hero and I don't think that only certain people are destined to be a hero. You just have to be at the right place at the right time and willing to risk your own life to save anothers. To say one would make that sacrifice would be speculation, I think it is an adrenalin rush that puts you out there to jump in, no thought process is involved.

A hero is anyone who performs an altruistic act for the benefit of another. It can be as simple as giving food to the poor or as daring as diving into the water to save a drowning person. I think all firemen are heroes. Teachers who are truly interested in the growth and development of their students are heroes. As far as making a sacrifice, I would hope that if called upon to make an enormous one, I would, but I don't think anyone knows for sure until they are faced with such a choice.

a hero is a person who lays their life on the line for others every day. such as Military Personnel, Police and Firefighters, Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics. these people are the ones who protect our lives, property and lifestyles and whom I personally consider heroes. remembering all give some and some give all in their line of duty. to me the Ladies and Gentlemen define the word " hero " in every sense of the word. GOD BLESS THEM ALL !!

I would define a hero as someone who selflessly chooses to help another, who makes the world a better place even for just one person, even for just one minute.
We all have the potential to be heros.

A hero is someone who does risks physical harm for someone else (they possibly don't know) without thinking twice about it. They don't do heroic things to gain power or honor, they help people because it's what they feel is the right thing to do.

Many heroes are in the USA. Plenty were seen on 9/11. A person who puts their life in jeopardy to save someone else's life.
Jesus said, "no greater love has any man than he lay down his life for his friend."
