The smart aleck answer is because they can......but seriously the real reason is that management at the company tolerates it, & employees are aware of the companies culture regarding absenteeism not having significant ramifications.

It could be that way for a number of reasons though. Management may just be avoiding the issue to avoid confrontation. It could also be that the workload is such that a few folks being out on a regular basis isn't detrimental to complwtion of work in a timely manner, & also allows the firm to reduce labor expense thru the employee's absenteeism without having to actually cut back hours & risk discontent among associates.

I can't believe the level of absenteeism at my company, either. It is difficult for management to do a lot (HIPPA) if someone says they are sick you can no longer ask a lot of questions. Unless it's for three days in a row, where they can ask for a doctor's excuse, but people usually don't and most only take off one day at a time. These people have a sense of entitlement and shoddy work ethic. I have no regard for people who call off alot.

Because they either don't want to work or don't have a good work ethic. This puts more burden and responsibility on the employees who do come to work everyday.
