For most gouramis it's really easy. The male has slightly brighter color and a long pointed dorsal and anal fin while the female is duller and has more rounded dorsal and anal fins. Sometimes when they are young it's easier to tell when there are several together in a tank. Heres a link with some pictures that will help:

There is one universal gender difference seen in most Gourami species - the dorsal (top) fin is long and comes to a distinct point in males, while females have a shorter rounded dorsal fin.

Also certain species show color variations between the sexes. The male Pearl Gourami has a deep red-orange coloration on the throat and breast. The male Moonlight Gourami has orange to red coloration of the pelvic fins.

this varies between different types of gourami, some are more obvious than others.

for instance the dwarf gourami is quite easily identified as the male is the brightly coloured one and the female is more of a muted silver colour with a hint of other colours. she will also be smaller and chubbier in the mid-section of her body.

whereas with the gold gourami the most telling sign is the male has a longer more pointed dorsal fin.

with the moonlight gourami the males also have the longer pointed dorsal fin, and also may have a hint of orange-red on their pelvic fins.
