In Roman Numerals, 20 can be witten as XIX,
therefore by cancelling the I,
you would have XX which is twenty.

if canceling is the same as "taking away" than my proposal would be:
take away "-1" from 19
19- (-1)=20 and you get twenty.

If we're working in base 12, ninteen is 12 + 9 = 21 in base ten. Hence subtracting one would yield twenty.
