I think Levi Strauss did in the Gold Rush days. Denim is cheap and rugged, so it is great for miners and cowboys. That picture you use resembles my gal from japan. It is nice!

i'm not really sure, but i think previously only farmers used to wear it because they were very hardy and it didnt matter if they got dirty. slowly it gained a "reputation" and others began wearing it too? ^^
