El Nino / La Nina is an effect where the warm waters of the ocean move from their normal location, causing all types of phenomena world wide (more rain here, less here, temp...etc) Southern Oscillation index is not the same thing..but it is one of the several ways we try to measure it. It is the pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin, Australia. Other indexes use ocean temperatures or other locations.

The cyclic variation of atmospheric pressure at sea level between the eastern and western regions of the southern Pacific Ocean as a result of the periodic cooling and warming of surface water known as La Niña and El Niño. It has an average period of 2.33 years.
