Fancy goldfish, common goldfish, and koi are 3 different types of fish. They are all types of carp, but have different needs. Fancy goldfish usually grow round and not quite as long, maybe 6-10 inches and as big around as a softball. Common Goldfish get about 10-12 inches long, but can get bigger (there are some in lake tahoe right now that are 18+ inches). Koi can easily reach 3+ feet long and live for hundreds of years. (The oldest Koi was 226 years old)

The size of a tank will limit the growth rate of the fish in it. This is due to the hormones fish release into their water stunting the growth of other fish (and themselves). Frequent part water changes (20% weekly or fortnightly) will reduce the build up of this and let the fish grow unhindered.
Food should be given a little at a time no more than twice a day. As long as they have eaten it all within 5 minutes. Any remaining food is unlikely to be eaten and will therefore clog up the filters and make your tank dirty. Treats such as blood worms, Daphnia and Tuibifex worms are good and will ensure they have the correct nutirition.

The average is 12 inches for commons, 8 for fancies. But both types can potentially double that. I've got a 12 inch oranda.

They can grow to be up to 18 inches, depending on what variety they are. In a tank the size of that, they will be huge!
