My best friend most of the time comes across as punk, although she isn't. She is fine most of the day, but I worry at her when she is alone at her house, or even with her parents. Everyone knows she has trouble sleeping and takes cough syrup to sleep. She's told me that the reason she's had trouble sleeping is that she is depressed, and at times mildly suicidal (she has never attempted or done anything EVER, at any time or any place). Recently she tried cutting herself on her legs, but I doubt that she's going to do that again due to her worrying about them later. I've told her to tell her parents. She says she did once, but I think she said something like "I think I might be depressed mom" which doesn't help her mom understand the situation. I told her to tell her again, but she shirks from doing so because her parents (according to her) are mostly the reason she is depressed. She knows that I plan on telling someone if she does something extreme. The question is, when is extreme?

it sounds like she is crying out for help. you definately need to go to her parents and tell them or a teacher. she needs serious help. she may get mad at you to begin with but she'll get over it.

Your friend needs help. If she is mildly suicidal someone needs to know this. If she has to take cough syrup to sleep and has cut her legs who knows what will come next. Have her talk to her pastor, guidance counselor or some other adult that can help.

You don't want to wait to long before she does something really bad. You don't want have something happen and you could have helped before it's to late.

Generaly, depressed people keep to themselves.Life's such a drag then why talk about it,huh?!Although suicide is to be taken quite seriously, maybe your friend is just bored. Is she smart or talented in some way?Does she have hobbies or interests?Overactive minds need the distraction because they have a tendancy to make things worse. Please keep an eye on the mutilation issue.Best of luck.

Well, in her case, the self-mutilation was extreme enough. Thats a sign that shes not afraid of hurting herself, so you need to tell someone before she hurts herself worse. Try telling her parents, or taking her to an emergency community crisis center, if there's one in your area. She needs help now.

Tell someone about her problem now before it's too late. Don't wait for it to get worse before telling someone like her parents. also keep her company so she won't feel so lonely and do what you feel will help her out in her time of need-show her you really care about her.

Isn't it already extreme that she's suicidal?

Tell someone now before it gets worse..

If she ever tries to hurt herself again - then go immediately to her parents and tell them.
