Maybe it's a little unfair asking the question which is the best footballer as how can you compare Pele who was a forward with Maradona who was an attacking midielder? Its like comparing Peter Schmeichel with Franz Beckenbauer.
As everyone prefers the offensive aspect of the game I think Pele should be referred to as the greatest as he was a great player playing in a great team, although Maradona seemed to control his Argentine national team more through his play.

Yea Pele of course!
He was top class as a teenager, embarassed the goalkeepers with over a 1000 goals!!!
But i guess you do have to give credit even to modern day footballers like Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho... They certainly from the legends of football!!!
Not to forget even players like Maradona as well!!!

Pele - his understanding and individual skill - his impact on his country - his impact at the international level - his impact as spokesperson and elder-statesman - all are unparalleled in sports.
