Cricket is a game of skill, LUCK, and mental attitute. The Australians have got more all-round skill, bat, bowl, field. They are the most competitive players in world cricket.
However their luck has been bad lately, example: injuries to Brett Lee, Hayden, Symonds. The biggest reason for their losses however, was the improved mental attitute of their opponents.
England finally focused on their own task to win games instead of thinking too much about the Aussie sledging. If they had the same focus during the test matches they could have won atleast 2 out of 5.
New Zealand are always mentally tough and have talented players with a great captain (fleming is better than ponting). They had some luck in last few games (you need some when chasing 340. The Aussies were missing some of the competitiveness without ponting and symonds.
Mix all those things together and these are the reasons for the current losing streak.
By the way, will the aussies win the world cup?
If ponting and gilchrist are there it is possible. However the competitive edge the aussies usually have will not be there. Why, well this is THE world cup and easy going types like Flintoff will be transformed into very competitive, urgent players.
Will the aussies lose the world cup?
Probably. They have developed an attitude that it is their right to be the winner. Unfortunately some of the teams (and west indian crowds) do not have the same belief. The aussies are in for a big shock, they need it and deserve it also.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about the Black Caps. OK ausi used a second rate team, i seem to recall the final match where new zealand were without vettori, oram and bond yet they still pulled in a huge 300+ target and thumped ausi yet again. The Black Caps faced huge critism after dropping out of the tri series and had alot to prove to themselves, the critics and the fans. Ausi came up against a side that had something to prove and they did just that. Ausi played poorly in the first match and deserved to lose in embarrassing fashion like that (10 wicket hiding) however they picked it up in the final 2 and in my opinion it wasn't that ausi lost those matches it was more the fact the Black Caps had some confidence and finally started showing some form and came to play. Nothing was wrong with the ausi team it was more the fact that the kiwis played some outstanding cricket

Well, quite obviously, we need to have a good, long, hard look at our bowling, particularly at the end of an innings. We have been in good situations but have let games slip - today being a perfect example with NZ being 4/41. They just seem to be serving up cannon fodder which is getting the treatment it deserves. Hopefully the break before the World Cup will help them to rest their bodies but also look at where they need to improve.
I think another contributing factor to the loss was the changes made to the squad for the CB series finals - the beginning of this slump. I think the selectors made a HUGE mistake by making the changes they did. The squad had momentum going, and the only change that was needed was Hodge in for Symonds, which had proven itself in the last game at Melbourne. The selections they made disrupted the momentum, and brought in players with no form behind them, and dropped players who were not out of form.

India would want to sign off with a win & Australia doesn't take any matches, as India does, after winning a series, as a formality. They'd want to drive the last nail through India's coffin, if they had it their way, so India should be ready for a battle & only they are to gain moral points, as the series is gone, be it 4-3 or 5-2 but 4-3 sounds good.

Pontings absence has caused them to lose the winning habit. He is like a binding glue to the entire team. There are quire a few mistakes done by Hussey when it comes to using the bowlers and fielding positions.
Once Ponting comes back, it will be alright... It's just going to take some more time.

Dear suresh, the Aussie team and the srilankan team played recent series without their key players,so they lost series.Imagine if ponting and Gilchrist were there then things were different.
