in order to get married in japan, one document is needed from your embassy.. That is proof that you are single at your home country.. Does the city office marriage section checks with the embassy if the letter is authentic or not? Do they call them or fax the letter to them and check it?

I am not sure about Japan, but I got married in Taiwan and they did check it out.
So they are almost certainly going to check it out.
I have a Japanese friend, and I remember him saying that the government does EVERYTHING by the book.
