NO....flat head is caused by the infant lying on it's back or side (depending on where it's flat) too much. Infants skulls are very soft when they are born and they spend so much time sleeping (most of the day) that sometimes they just end up with flatter heads. Generally it self corrects when the child begins to roll over and sit up...but on occasion it needs the help of a helmet..which it looks like you said your cousin doesn't need.
It happens to a lot of children and it is absolutely NOT due to abuse or neglect.

It's from the baby laying one way all the time. It's easily fixed by alternating sides that the baby is placed on when laying down. This will also help strengthen the neck muscles evenly. And keep in mind, some people have naturally flat heads anyway.

Flathead is due to a baby not being rotated enough. A baby should not lay in the same position all the time. It's key to let babies lay on their sides and back. It's also important to let a baby lay on their stomachs as well, provided there is someone within reach of the baby at all times in case they're not able to rotate their head completely on their own.
While flathead is considered normal, it's also very preventable.

If the baby is sat up right in a baby chair or their car seat they are more able to see what is around them and are more inclined to start moving the position of their head themselves even young babies, they don't need to be lying down all the time no wonder they cry they are bored so sit the baby up and the head should improve over time.

Hi,
Since the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has had a lot of input into how we put our babies to sleep. There are a lot of cases of Flat head babies around.
We are told to put our babies to sleep only on their backs which makes the back of a babies head flat. It is called moulding.
There are special helmets now for some babies to minimise this. Babies do grow out of the flat head in time when they are older.
If you are concerned that it is child abuse though you should definately talk to your doctor or a proffesional about it.
This is only one reason for flat heads..

flat heads are NOT caused by abuse or neglect. Of course, neglected children can develop a flat head, but many children who are well cared for also develop the condition. It would be like saying "If a toddler has a bruise is that caused by abuse?" well maybe, but more than likely, it isn't.

It's due to not moving the baby's head when it's laying down. The baby's skull is soft still, so the head needs to occasionally be moved from side to side while laying down to maintain a round shape.

children are often born with this conditon and i am not sure why but it is not from abuse in most casses. These children may wear helmets to help protect their head.
