I'm off to Riga for the weekend and am wondering just how easy it is going to be to find decent vegetarian food. I eat dairy and eggs but obviously no meat or fish. My guidebook says that pretty much every dish in Latvia is based around meat!!! I know there is one completely vegetarian restaurant but obviously I can't eat there every meal. Anyone been there and clocked the veggie food? Any Latvians out there with a recommendation for me? Thanks

To Difi - Excuse me? Not pure vegetarian. Er, yes I am. Vegetarians can eat both dairy and eggs - it's vegans that can't. I am perfectly well aware of my own diet thank you, and you have not even attempted to answer my question with any helpful information about eating out in Riga. 2 points on here are very cheap for some people!

The Latvian people eat meat and as you know, it might be hard for you to find vegetarian food.

However, there are places where you can get pancakes in downtown Riga, and there are pasta places too. Some good restaurants can be found in the area around the Latvian Freedom Monument (on the old town side).

Another tip is the Stockmann warehouse. It's originally Finnish and in there they probably have the best food store in Riga. You can buy delicious pirogues etc to go. I recommend it. Stockmann is located close to the Opera (on the other side of the street).

Have a nice trip!
