I like to read a lot, but then sometimes I feel as if I am boring my boyfriend. I took this semester off from school because I just can not afford it this time around. So, I figured that I should not waste this time, and have started to read a minimum of 100 pages a day. Is this weird? I know that there is more to learn in the world than just what you read in books, but somehow I feel comfortable knowing that I am learning something that should teach me something.

Yes, I do have a job. One that makes me want to escape asap.

I don't force myself. I believe in close reading and analysis of the text. I enjoy looking for metaphors and symbols and thinking about the time period of the text.

Well you ask if it is wierd... but you assume that weird is somehow bad.
Lets take a look at what "normal" is first. Normal is coming home from a dull and uninteresting job, parking your beat up car in the garage and hoping that the funny sound it makes doesn't mean it is going to blow up before your next paycheck. Then you walk into the house and find a bill from MasterCard that you can't pay. You spend the next 20 min. yelling at the kids while you cook a dinner that came out of a box or a can, clean up the dishes and send the kids to go watch Cable while you drink a couple of beers, and watch whatever pre-digested pap the TV Networks tell you that you should... because that is all your friends at work talk about. Then on Sunday you sleep in, and after that you either fix things around the house or watch sports and drink beer. If you are lucky you get so fat you die of a heart attack before you retire and find out just how small those Social Security Checks really are.
So Yes you are "weird" but weird is GOOD. When I was in law school a friend of mine said "You know, EVERYONE here is a geek" and she was (with a couple of exceptions) right... the "normal" kids didn't get into law school. You had to be "weird" in one way or another in order to do that, in order to do ANYTHING.
Anyone who achieves anything is "weird" today. People who work out seriously are "weird". People who take night classes to get ahead are "wierd". People who save their money and aren't in debt are "weird". People who join the Army, create art, or read good literature are "weird". People who go to church, are active in their community, who take part in politics, heck people who are still on their first marriage... all of them are "weird" by contemporary standards.
In short, anyone who is anything more than another faceless, soulless, mediocre consumer drone is "weird".
So go BE WEIRD!! Weird is good! Weird is interesting! Weird people are the only people that DO anything or believe in anything anymore. If your boyfriend isn't weird dump his mediocre behind and go find someone who IS.
Weird is people who have lives but don't have televisions, normal is people who have televisions but don't have lives.

In spite of the way most teenagers feel towards books, it IS OK to read. But don't read 100 pages a day because you feel like you have to, read it for pleasure. It's also all right if you feel like reading 20 or 5 pages a day. But make sure you don't just go through it and then forget everything in a matter of days. Take the time to think about what you have read and compare it with your own experience. That way it can be real and not just barren knowledge. Just have fun with it!

PRAISES BE TO THE GODS! No, No, No, do not let that fool boyfriend of your make you feel bad for reading. Nor should you feel bad for doing so. Not only does reading help you expand your mind (research has indicated that reading...and listening to classical music BTW) helps create new connections in the brain.
I'm a speed reader. I know I can sit down and knock out a 100 pgs in a short period of time. And if you are an avid reader, chances are so do you. I doubt the reading is really taking up that much of your time, and it is time far better spent than glued in front of the TV or computer.
If you are reading that much, you should consider writing book reviews. We publish book reviews on our website. And there are other sites that accept reader reviews as well. Build a name for yourself as a good reviewer and writers and publishers may start sending you books for free.

I personally think it is wonderful that you are reading!!!! If more kids in school would read everyday, the world would be a better place.
May I suggest that instead of reading everyday novels, etc... try to read something everyday that is going to impact your mind.
Where you live, go to the library and read up on some books about the state and county that you live in. This is wonderful information, and you are learning something new all the time. Also, read science magazines, and books about wild animals. They have wonderful information in them.
Always learn at least 2 things you didn't know with each book you read!!!!!!!!! That is the key to expanding your mind through reading!!!!
Good luck!!!!

I love to read!! I think you are doing a good thing. It will keep your mind active while you are off of school. I'm very fortunate that my job allows me to read while I'm at work. The only thing I will say from experience is that if you force yourself to read 100 pages a day (i know you said you weren't) you may get burnt out. Please don't do that. From my experience when I got that way, I hated not reading but couldn't bring myself to pick up a book! Happy Reading!!

I give a thumbs up to you. Reading is cool and there's nothing wrong with learning from books because if you start to learn from the books you start to learn from life as well. So never ever give up reading.

I don't think there's anything wrong with reading, infact I think more people should read, but you said you've taken time off school because you can't afford it. do you have a job? and if not maybe you should address your money issue instead of sitting around reading?
