You salivate all the time, but normally it stays in your mouth because your mouth is closed and your lips seal it in. At night, you might involuntarily open your mouth to breathe if your nose is clogged, and then the saliva can dribble out if your head is turned to the side. This is usually called drooling.

Everyone does to some extent!

The lips are flaps of skin, kept taught by muscles. When you are asleep, your muscles relax and your lips droop.

If your head is tiled slightly back, the saliva goes down your throat. If your head is tilted slightly forward though, you will drool!

The other thing that makes it a bit more complicated, is how much saliva your are producing. That will depend on how much you have been drinking before going to bed, how much the saliva is being dried out by the air moving in and out of your mouth, if you have an infection, how deeply asleep you are and finally, what your brain is thinking about...

Your brain is active, even while asleep. If you were thinking about food for example, you will tend to produce more saliva in anticipation of eating some nice food.

We all remember dreams, but no-one seems to know what our brains are up to when we are not dreaming. There is definitely some brain activity going on though!

Of all these, the two most important ones are how much liquid you have drunk in the 6 hours or so before going to sleep (how hydrated you are) and how deeply you are asleep (so how relaxed are your muscles).

I hope this helps a bit?!

the reason that you dribble is the naughty dreams you are having so shut up and go back to sleep

This is because you dream of food, when in fact you are biting your pillow.
