Whilst in my local shopping centre the other day I overheard a vacuous conversation being had between two girls standing near me - one of them said to the other "Oh yeah, *man's name* he's got well good style cause he buys only label clothing...".
Being a total vintage clothing junkie who takes a lot of grief from the local chavs and townies for the way I present myself, my opinion is that it doesn't matter about where you obtain your clothes from (it could be vintage clothing shops, ebay, charity shops, high street, label stores), if you aren't a dipsh*t, know how to match styles and colours, have an eye for what looks good and ultimately feel confident with yourself, your style and what you are wearing, then that's what it's all about.
What are people's opinions?

I totally agree with you. People who only buy labels do so because they have no individual sense of style and are simply buying into the image created by the marketing agencies working on behalf of these big-label companies.
I'm sure we can all think of the girl we've known who always seems to have a gorgeous, unique bag or broach or dress and more often than not she hasn't bought if from a mass-produced label shop but from somewhere smaller or less well-known which gives her that difference.
Personally I mix my clothes from all kinds of shops including vintage, some high-street, primark (yes you've got to give the place a chance) and by modifying my own clothes sometimes. If you use such variety then you can be sure of a unique look which is much better than being another clone!

I totally agree.
It's hillarious to see people wearing fake designer brands platered in the logos/tradmarks. I love it!
Many of the designer lables market the stuff purely with these narrow minded idiots in mind. Only these kind of people would pay so much for a t shirt covered in thousands of 'D's and G's'.
I think real style is down to individuality and going against the grain.
I might pay alot for some of my items of clothing but I also would pay £1 for a top out of a bargain bucket if I thought that I could do something with it. I have allsorts of clothes - some expensive, some vintage (the best) and some just cheap highstreet.
People will always say to me that I have an unusual way of dressing - usually I get complimets but sometimes you do get the odd idiot that will not get me.
As long as you have the confidence to stand out and be yourself, your going in the right direction.

You can buy labelled clothing and not look good. I live in Italy and both rich and poor have the idea that if you buy branded "fashion" clothes, you automatically have some right to a better social status...the thing is that those who know how to dress do it with the correct colour matching and combination of clothes, also clothes that match you. Buying Armani sun glasses which then look bad on you doesn't make you more fashionable!
I think style is more important than fashion, in the sense of dressing.

I think it is very sad when people go on about Oh Ive got this top etc. The cheaper clothing is just as good sometimes- but more importantly it's how good the piece of clothing looks on the individual! I'd love to see people like that wear some of the stuff from the catwalks - say prehaps the famous black bin bag dress! in public then see what they would say - Not oh its Versace!!! more like what the **** is that" sad o!

I could buy every Tommy Hilfiger or Abercrombie and Fitch item out there, but if I had bad taste in color matching I would still look like hell when I dressed in the stuff. Even if I didn't, I'd end up looking like just another sheep.
Style sense has nothing to do with labels and everything to do with knowing what looks good on you and knowing how to put together a look for yourself.
I'm into the vintage look too. :)

Labels are style for those who can't recognise it for themselves.
My girlfriend loves shopping and buys quite a lot of 'label' clothes...but she will also buy something cheap if it works and is what she wants. She is quite rich but loves a bargain!...and does not look for labels on other people. To her, they either have style or they don't.

This subject of labels and fashion is getting to be too much, if you want to be cool and dress as a trend setter dress to please you and not the fashion industry who if they had their way would have you dressed up like a bunch of robots.........
Get this! i dress in a Fedora and a double breasted suit, let's say black suit with a red shirt and a black tie with pointed shoes.
Ever since i made that change i have had more compliments from women than you can imagine, women that did not previously hit on me are doing so now and do you know what they say? sexy, manly and great!
Forget my screen name which is trendz............wish that i made those changes years ago rather than follow the tastes of the masses. Be different be you and watch for the comments and stares from women. Men? will pretend not to notice you but they do and i heard them say i wish i could do that........and they can!

Hey, i totally agree with you.
In fact, i think that people who wear clothes from varied stores AND know how to look good in them have more style than those who go head to toe gucci, or whatever.
it's not about becoming a walking signboard for a store, it's about having fun with fashion and loving it.
you really got your thing going. that's cool [:
