The season of Lent is meant to symbolize Christ's self exile of 40 days contained in the barren region, to quickly and pray and deliver at the same time means from God to prepare for his ministry and his trial (crucifixion) and to be tempted by the devil. So traditionally, Christians use this time premiere as a lot as Easter to "grant up" something to God by using a penance and prepare themselves spiritually for the celebration of Christ's resurrection. It replaced into no meat in any respect in the course of the Lenten season. Then Vatican II got here alongside and loosened those regulations alongside with some others. Now, the abstinence of meat is needed purely on Fridays, yet many Catholics proceed this all year round, back in remembrance of Christ's very last Supper which the church teaches us befell on a Friday. also, now days many Christians grant a sacrifice of their time to do something for others a lot less fortunate than to offer up something. you know, help out at a homeless safeguard or soup kitchen or retirement homestead, that type of ingredient. and then there are those who do no longer do something. it truly is a controversy of decision, thats all.

Look at your bad habits.
Are you cynical?
Are you sarcastic?
Do you gossip?
Find the one bad habit that hurts your relationship with God the most.
Work on that bad habit during Lent and then when Lent is over keep working on it.
With love in Christ.

Ask the Lord what you should do "give up" and wait quietly for an answer. He will guide you if you let Him.
