The thing to do is begin with small steps until you get used to it...then you can try more.
The best small step for a shy person is to
1. Make sure it's a stranger you're comfortable with
2. Ask questions about the other person. "What kind of work do you do? Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?" Let your interest and the conversation guide your questions.
3. LISTEN. People love a good listener. And you don't have to talk...until you have a follow-up question.
4. At some point you'll hear something that you have in common. You can say, "Something like that happened to me, too...." and you can describe what happened. This kind of sharing is safe and people enjoy it...it establishes common ground.
5. When you feel stressed from too much conversation, just close it off politely. "It's been really nice talking to you. I hope we have a chance to talk some more again. Nice meeting you..." Then you can withdraw into the comfort of yourself again.
Three techniques at work here...listening, selective self-disclosure, and stretching. You're in control, and you don't have to try to be someone you don't want to be.
Try it this way. After some successes, you may discover that this approach has benefits, and it will get easier. Nisha, I hope this helps. Good luck!
