A value system is a moral code. Traditional values put less emphasis on materialistic things than Modern values. Sadly, today is about chasing the almighty dollar out of greed or the need to be a two paycheck family just to get the bills paid.

Traditional values have been around longer than modern values. I adhere to tradition more than what is going on in today's world. It seems things were not as taken for granted when I was a child. The family unit was more special. We spent more time together talking about our days and what happened. We would always visit relatives several times a week, which was fun. Marriages and relationships seemed less stressful & more meaningful. Women didn't have to work outside the home if they chose not to. Men were men, and ladies were ladies--and roles were better established for both. There was less hustle and bustle, it was OK to rock on the porch swing to relax. Modern values are more surrounded by the need for more materialism and money. There isn't the same respect for life or for each other now. That's the sad part. Family reunions are rare now even though lifespans are longer. Give me traditional values, stuffed goose down mattresses to sleep on instead of styrofoam, picnics instead of McDonalds, & family conversation instead of TV or a blaring stereo anyday.

Traditional values were the norm and you did not question there place or your place in society. Now with the Modern Value system people are more free to be who they want to be.
Its not always easy to have all this free will but I like it as when I was raised we were not given much leeway to do what we wanted to do in this world. With this new freedom does come problems are some people are their own worst boss! Look at the self destructive nature of our people...its not a pretty sight. Maybe they did the same years ago but they just kept in MUM?

History has shown that modern values eventually win out over traditional values, but that there is a severe fight in the meantime.
Personally, I like many aspects of the traditional value system. Especially the emphasis on personal relationships and the central importance of people.
(as you can tell, I broadly define the traditional value system beyond a simple Republican, conservative, religious right perspective)

I don't believe that there is anything like modern values. What we now have is a valueless society. If our traditional values are strictly adhered to, we will not find our selves in the mess our societies are into today.

"Values " are VALUES whether traditional or modern .
Traditional values are to be preserved with add on values from modern experience.
values will add value to the culture, utility , richness, quality and standard of living.

For ultimate peace in life, one has to select judiciously from both -no extremes rather midway is the corect. That is, we must use our intelligent in selecting those traditional values and the modern ones that will satisfy most of the situations in life and also enjoying the hormoneous feelings from others around us.

There is nothing wrong with them, its all about how you see them. there are certain values that do not tarnish like the eternal principles of life, like love, understanding etc. But there are certain traditional values that can be tested in the present context and you can decide if you really want to carry it on. Like the dowry system or the tradition of fathers, husbands, brothers takeing care of the women in traditional societies, Todays women who are able to take care of her self can say "No i dont need this kind of protection i can protect myself. But it depends on how a woman feels about it. If one is comfortable with traditional values its ok, but as far as he/she does not impose it on others believeing that it is the only right thing to do, Imposing things on others is depriving the other of his freedom to make his of her choices based on what they value it.
Modern Values, will take its own position, the old is not working anymore, and it is surely not wrong if something that works takes its own position. Modern values are more practicle and it works for people of thepresent generation, a modern woman will not jump in the husbands pyre, life is life, and one has to move on. Life is like a river and river only knows to flow. we are all on our path of realizing something and unless the soul expresses it freely how can we express ourselves. It is better to express oneself and die than to live in frustration and depression just because it is a traditional practice. Its a choice of that you have to make " Do you want to be happy and alive and live with your values that work for you, or do you want to be unhappy and be a living dead and make everyone else around you happy except you! it a choice!!!"
