I would say either. BUT I am NOT an English major so I could be wrong. After reading this several times I myself would use There was a million dollars misplaced. My logic is having a million dollars would most likely be in one container of in one bundle how ever it is kept. So to say There were in my belief would mean they were kept in separate packages or containers, or bundles. But to say There was a million I would take it to mean they are together. But Hey, I could be so wrong. Hope I helped.
