Its not exactly clear when the first car was created - the French claim 1884 (De Dion-Bouton), the Germans claim 1886 ( when Karl Benz built his motor tricycle). The UK industry celebrated the centenary of the car in 1985, so as not to favour either the French or the Germans.

However, there were self-propelled vehicles long before then, such as Joseph Cugnot's 1769 steam-powered gun carriage. The first recorded motor vehicle accident occurred in 1771 when Cugnot's machine collided with a brick wall.
