Ford Madox Ford's Parades' End triology is utterly enthralling; it starts shortly before the war, and touches on the Suffragette movement and goes through the hero Tietjen's experiences in the trenches plus his difficulties later with Shellshock. It covers effortlessly the social changes the war brought as well as the personal changes for the characters. The author served at the Front too.

'Birdsong' by Sebastian Faulk is a realistic and harrowing account of life in the trenches. I found it trully enlightening and yet upsetting. I hadn't really realised what my Grandad went through. One of the best books I've ever read.

Everybody else is going to say "All quiet on the Western Front", too.
Or, there's "The first casualty", by Ben Elton. Not a bad read.
