New Years Resolution was not to give anything up for lent and I ain't breaking that ;)

This giving up for lent is rather a strange notion. You decide or as a kid it is decided for you through guilt that you will give up something for lent. Are you doing it as a Catholic or just as something that you do coz everyone else is. In Ireland what ever you give up it seems that you have a days grace on March 17 St. Patrick's Day which must have been when Jesus decided he'd celebrate too coz that day in ireland you seem exempt form lent. You stuff yourself and get drunk. Then when it's all over you have easter Heeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Where you gorge and binge out on whatever it was you gave up making up for the 40 days or 39 with paddy's day 38 if there is a birthday you just have to enjoy.

I think taking up is more important. But something that takes time. Maybe visiting that granny that has a million and one war or depression stories that you have heard a million an done times. Just sitting with her (or whoever) can make a difference. Spending time to chill out in this fast paced consumeristic driven society.

Whatever you do enjoy.

Lent is a christian time - not unique to Catholics as some think. I have given up things for lent in the past - and successfully. I've become disheartened with the church over the past 2 years and so I won't be giving up anything this year, additionally when I moved and left my old church I've not found one a patch on it in the current area. So that is partly why I have lost my connection with the church and the associated events.

I admire you for doing it though, and committing yourself to go to mass once a week. Good for you!

I'm giving up meat, as usual, and I'm also giving up cookies for lent. I haven't been to mass in over 4 months, so I'm going to try to go more often again and I'm going to try to donate some spare cloths to the goodwill.

I am trying to learn to meditate this Lenten season, I am always distracted and have to learn to focus... plus I am reading a lot of the books Cardinal Ratzinger wrote they are very deep but very good for the soul. I used to give up computer yakking with my friends but it has gotten old. I have other things to do so my life so I not attached to computer time like I used to be.,,My guy is giving up snacking and my son is going to start the gym and learn to get up early, which will be very hard for both of them!
