is it just because they eat flies? personally I can't think of anything good about having a giant hairy eight-legged monster lurking in the corner ready to run towards me and eat me and living in constant fear of it!!!

I agree - they terrify me. We had one in the bath this morning and the hubbie was at work (major panic), not wanting to have it stay in there and defiantly not going to even consider moving it I just draped a towel over the side and into the bath(spiders can't climb out of baths as it's too slippery). But as soon as that spider got to the towel I legged it (no pun intended).

But spiders eat flies and all sorts f horrible bugs - plus, if your cat eats the spiders they're a good source of protein (eeww).

No, I don't think it's in the Bible. And yes, most likely house-spiders did exist before houses did. They were probably a type of spider that liked living in little cracks and corners in well-lit caves... and gradually adapted to suit the conditions inside houses.

If you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive.
I love having spiders in my home, they eat all the little nasties (some unseen to the eye), at least you can see spiders and keep an eye on them. Some, like the money spider, also have superstition attached .

They don't just eat flies - those big, hairy ones are house spiders that don't spin webs. They catch and eat other creepy-crawlies around the house! Don't stop me getting rid of 'em though!!

Apart from the other answers, they only live in dry environment which means your house isn't damp and has not got underlying damp issues. They do kill flies and they are a good source of protein for your pets if you have any. If you see one in a shed, its also a good sign as it means your shed is dry!!!!

one, i don't know of a single spider species that would want to have you for dinner. two, they keep more insects than just flies at bay. if you'd rather deal with flies and moths and gnats and other insects invading your home, then get rid of the spiders, otherwise, try to learn to live in peace with them.

Because they are an exceptionally good biological means of disposing of flys, bluebottles and wasps.

We have one quite small species that appears to specialise in disposing of woodlice.

I guess they would be good for catching insects, but I would have to agree with you - I don't think I'd want them as roommates :-)

Maybe they can be trained to do household chores. All those legs, they'd be great at multi-tasking.
