From the bench mark test I have seen,
The Intel Core 2 DuoE6600 Conroe 2400/266
out performs by alot, the
AMD Athlon 62 x2 4600+ Winsor 2400/200
except price, the Intel retails for around $300.00, the AMD Retails for around $200.00
Just for the heck of it, I compared the ,
Intel Core 2 DuoE6600 Conroe 2400/266
to the
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2400
The Intel still wins almost all the benchmarks
The two biggest reasons are.
The intel CPU lets the newest video cards operate more to their potential, they had been hitting a bottle neck because of the speed of the CPU.
Also, the core 2 duo like the AMD has 4mb of L2 cache, but the Intel allows both processors to address the full 4mb, where the AMD only allows the processors to address 2mb each.
so, right now, for the money, the Core 2 duo, is the fastest CPU out there. Even the cheap low level Core 2 duo's out perform the fastest AMD CPU's in most benchmarks.

Heres some other reason why you should pick the core 2 duo.
Core 2 Duo has 4 processors in 1 socket. The top of the line Core 2 Duo has 8 processors in 1 socket! It run much cooler than any AMD therefore you can overclock the crap out of it.
The only way you can get 4 processors on a computer is to buy those 2 sockets motherboards which require a really expensive power supply and run twice as hot. For single socket board, good luck.

both dual core processors you have mentioned are nearly same with respect to speed, operating at 2.4GHz.
both support DDR2 ,and max 800MHz memory speed
but front side bus speed of E6600 is 1066 MHz, with 4Mb cache size
and FSB of athlon 64 X2 4600+ is 1000 MHz, with 1Mb chache size
may be because of this Core 2 Duo E6600 gives a better performance then the AMD athlon 64X2 4600+ , AMD was better processor then intel but after introduction of Core 2 Duo the proformance figure has shifted to intel as you can find out in the comparision charts at many hardware sites.
the following site has one such processor comparision chart

The best is INTEL CORE 2 DUO.Nothing on this world would challenge the core 2 duo.AMD is like over working machine. But the Intel manage it very nicely.AMD perform well ,but not like core2. AMD mainly think abut the performance. It'll work like having devil as a processor......My machine has Intel core 2 duo 2.13GHz.No AMD processor mach my needs...so go for a Intel processor
